When it comes to gardening, some people may think that these cold winter months aren’t good for much – but the ones in the know are using this time of hibernation to their advantage! This time of year is the best time to work on the landscape around your home and plan for a beautiful, bountiful yard in the quickly approaching spring and summer months. To help you get your hands wrapped around the sometimes daunting task of planning your landscape, we’ve pulled together the top 3 landscape design tips to get you started.

#1 Keep the Light in MindLandscape Design

Start to take note of which areas of your yard get sunlight in the mornings, in the evenings, all day, or little to none at all. This is going to greatly affect which plants you can put where because you want to make sure that the plants are getting the correct amount of sunlight that they need to grow.

#2 Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

One of the things that professionals try to keep in mind when designing landscaping is to repeat key features of the design. This can be repeating a specific anchor plant throughout the design like a tree or shrub, a repeating color pattern, or repeating texture. The key is to choose which element you want to repeat and build outward from there.

#3 Focus on a Focal Point

Choose a point in your yard that you want to be the focus of the design. This could be a sculpture, your front door and walkway, or a particularly interesting plant or tree. Choosing a focal point will help give you a place to start your design and build it around. Once you choose your focal point, you will design in a way that draws your eye throughout the yard up to your main area of focus.

Still feeling a bit overwhelmed? We understand, when trying to design a whole yard it can be a bit overwhelming for the beginner so our last piece of advice to you is to start small, with one flower bed or area of your home. Once you get that just how you like it, you can move on to the next area and grow from there. If you would like some advice or a hand with your design, Autumn Hill Nursery in either Canton, GA or Woodstock, GA can help you design the landscape for the back or front of your house – and you will get a discount on the plants you buy!
