Autumn Hill Nursery has a recommended product for almost any type of gardening question you have. When people ask us about which type of potting mix is best for their plants, the easy answer is Farfard Complete Container Mix. There are many great container mixes out there, this is just the one that we have used, liked, and consistently gotten results from over the years. If you’d like to research your other options on other types of potting mixes, here are some things that you should consider.

photo6Why Use a Potting Mix?

Think about the growing environment that a potted plant has to withstand. They have a restricted area for their roots to grow, and often get watered daily. Normal soil would compact under these conditions which would then suffocate the roots of the plant and the plant would die. That is why a rich, fluffy container mix is required.

What Makes a Good Potting Mix?

A good potting or container mix is one that is fluffy, holds moisture, and gives roots the perfect balance of air, moisture, nutrition, and anchor. Remember, roots need air as well as water to grow.

How Can You Choose Quality?

The easiest way to choose a quality potting mix is the same way that you would choose quality food from the grocery store – read the label and look for ingredients you recognize. Good potting mixes will include aged bark, perlite, vermiculite, lime, sphagnum peat moss, and possibly a wetting agent to help keep the soil uniformly moist. Some mixes contain pesticides to help reduce the chance of attack on your plants which is fine, but avoid these mixes for growing vegetables and herbs.

We carry Farfard mix at both of our nursery locations in Canton, GA and Woodstock, GA. If you’d like to ask us other questions about a potential other potting mix you’d like to use, give us a call! We’d be happy to help you.
