There is something wonderful about stepping outside and hearing a yard filled with birds chirping and singing. Cardinals, chickadees, wrens, woodpeckers, and other backyard visitors bring movement, color, and life to our gardens. If we want more birds, however, we need to provide more than feeders. We need safe havens for nesting, and protection from predators. Trees prove both.

Trees are the foundation of a bird-friendly landscape. Their branches provide places to perch, build nests, hide from predators, and find protection from summer heat and winter weather. A bird is also much more likely to visit a feeder or birdbath when trees and shrubs are nearby, providing a safe place to retreat when danger approaches.

Many trees are also a source for food; providing flowers, berries, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Just as importantly, their leaves and bark support caterpillars and other insects. These insects are especially valuable in spring and summer when parent birds need protein-rich food for their growing young. Native trees such as oaks, dogwoods, serviceberries, hollies, and native cherries can be especially beneficial to birds.

You don’t need a huge property to make a difference. A small tree, shrubs, and lower-growing plants create the layers of vegetation birds naturally seek. We can help you with ideas.

When you plant a tree, you’re planting more than shade and beauty. You’re creating a future nesting place, a source of food, a safe refuge—and helping ensure that our yards will be filled with birds for generations to come.
