diy terrarium - autumn hill nurseryHere at Autumn Hill Nursery, we love anything that adds a little green to the environment. Our seasonal workshops are full of fun DIY projects like holiday wreaths, miniature gardens, and fresh ideas for green home decor. If you’re looking for a chance to test your green thumb, a low-maintenance winter garden, or just a pop of color for your home office, a winter terrarium is right up your alley.

How to Build a Terrarium

To build a terrarium you’ll need a few supplies. Round up:

  • A clear container (try a glass flour jar, a decorative bird cage, or a uniquely shaped decanter)
  • Charcoal pieces
  • Plants and potting soil
  • Gloves
  • A watering can
  • A trowel

Choose your plants based on your needs. For example, many gardeners choose succulents and cacti for temporary terrariums. Others plant sheet moss and bright flowers for a brighter burst for their indoor container garden. Make sure to pick a plant that grows well in confined spaces.

After gathering your supplies, building a terrarium is a simple project. Add a base of 1-2 inches of charcoal. Combine the potting soil with your leftover active charcoal and fill the container about ⅓ full with the mixture. Map your design and plant your flowers and succulents. Push the soil firmly around the plants to remove air pockets. Add top dressing (moss or soil) and water your plants. Clean up any smudges of dirt from the glass and place your new terrarium where it can get an appropriate amount of sunlight. Maintain your indoor garden by pruning as needed and following the watering instructions for your specific plants.

The folks at our garden centers love home projects and gardening tips. When you come to our Saturday workshops you’re guaranteed a morning of fun and a beautiful new decor piece for your home or garden. Call Autumn Hill Nursery to learn more about our Woodstock gardening workshops.
