June is right around the corner which means the kids are about to get out of school and temperatures are rising. If you are one of the lucky ones that have a pool in your backyard, now is the time to plant your very own tropical oasis and plan your “stay-cation” to get away from it all in your own Woodstock, GA backyard!

Create the Caribbean Feel

When you think Caribbean  the first thing that comes to mind are white sands, thatched roofs, and lots of green palm trees! You can recreate this easily with your own pool landscaping. Bring in rocks and boulders to set next to your poolside and help the concrete creation blend in with the rest of your yard. Choose tropical plants that will thrive in the Georgia climate. Create shade to cool off in between swimming sessions. Add a refreshment center where you can grab a cool drink or quick snack and avoid tracking wet foot prints on your kitchen floor.

The Right Plants for the Job

When selecting plants to landscape your pool, it is important to choose not only for appearance but also for their resistance to heat and drought. The sun reflecting off of the water and surrounding slabs of concrete combined create a particularly hot environment that the plants must be able to survive. You can choose some plants that will survive the winter months such as banana trees, canna lilies, palms, and elephant ears and plant others in pots that you can overwinter in your home to ensure their survival until next season such as ferns, hibiscus, mandevilla, and caladiums. If you don’ t have a landscape designer helping you with your project, make sure you investigate each plant you choose and know their recommended USDA Zone Hardiness.

Autumn Hill Nursery has years of experience landscaping pools around the Canton and Hickory Flat, GA areas. We know what tropical plants will work in your yards to survive the winter months, and make your oasis last year after year. Give us a call to schedule a pool landscaping consultation today!
