Beautiful red amaryllis flowers and Christmas decor on wooden table

Forcing Amaryllis Bulbs Indoors: A Bright Bloom for Winter Days Winter might lack the lush greenery of spring, but you can bring vibrant color into your home by forcing amaryllis bulbs indoors. These stunning flowers, with their bold blooms and striking shapes, are a perfect way to brighten your space and lift your spirits during the colder months. Here’s how you can enjoy these show-stoppers right in your home.

Why Amaryllis?  Amaryllis are a favorite for indoor winter gardening because they’re easy to grow and produce large, colorful blooms that last for weeks. We have bulbs available in shades of red, pink, white, and even striped or bi-color varieties, they add a dramatic pop of color just when we need it most.

Getting Started

  • Choose the Right Bulb: Bigger bulbs typically produce more flowers. Look for firm, healthy bulbs with no signs of rot or damage.
  • Pick Your Pot: Use a pot with drainage holes that is slightly wider than the bulb itself. A snug fit encourages the best growth. ( see below for growing in water)
  • Use the Right Soil: A well-draining potting mix works best. Avoid soil that holds too much moisture, as amaryllis bulbs are prone to rot. We love the Fafard container mix.

Planting Tips

  1. Fill your pot with soil, leaving about two-thirds of the bulb exposed above the surface.
  2. Water lightly after planting to settle the soil, but don’t soak it.
  3. Place the pot in a warm, bright location to encourage growth.

Growing Amaryllis in Water While they sell vases specifically designed for bulbs, any vase or jar slightly larger than the bulb will do wonderfully.

  1. Prepare your bulb by trimming off any dry, brown roots. You want the roots of amaryllis bulbs in water to be fleshy and white
  2. Add gravel to the bottom of your container, till it’s about 3/4ths of the way full.
  3. Place the bulb root side down on the gravel medium, pushing it slightly into them but leaving the top third of the bulb exposed. Add water to about an inch below the base of the bulb. This is important. The base of the bulb and roots should be the only parts touching the water; otherwise, rotting of the bulb will occur. \
  4. Keep in a sunny spot and enjoy

Caring for Your Amaryllis in Soil

  • Light: Keep your amaryllis in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight.
  • Watering: Water sparingly until you see growth, then increase watering as the stalk grows, keeping the soil moist but not soggy.
  • Temperature: Maintain room temperatures between 60-70°F for optimal growth.

Watching it Bloom Within 6-10 weeks, your amaryllis will reward you with stunning flowers that last for weeks. For a prolonged bloom, move the pot to a slightly cooler location once the flowers begin to open.
